Pack Your Bag

Hello all,
I once saw a news piece where a journalist asked the presidential candidates what book they would take with them to the White House. That's a neat question and it reminded me of that old question, "If you were stranded on an island........"

So here's my media related question to you this week. Write a short paragraph on each:

1. If you were stranded on an island, what magazine would you like to wash up onshore every week? And why?

2. If you were stranded on an island, what one movie would you like to take with you (in a portable dvd player, of course)? And why?

3. If you were stranded on an island, what one album/song would you like to be loaded on the mp3 player you took with you? And why?

Good Luck

Well I can say I like this weeks blog just because i've ask this question before with friends. There was only one difference, us guys always added what women would be on the island with you. My magazine would be ESPN magazine, just because it covers all sports and has great stories about all kinds of athletes. The magazine also keeps up with scores with sports I like and it keeps up with college scores. My favorite movie is a tough one, I can't get over the new technology of movies these days. The old movies were a blessing with true acting and good humor. So my movie is Caddyshack, I love the humor that I will need on an island by myself. The movie is fricken hillarious and I could watch it a thousand times more. It also shows a little skin but most of all it shows different perspectives in the characters. I will need that to stay sane. Nothings better than good humor when you are river without a paddle. Finally, my album has to be something up beat with a good message. My album is Pennywises, About Time, the clash of guitar riffs and punk lyrics makes for a great rumble in the jungle. Just what I will need to keep me going for months at a time. The message in the lyrics will help me realize what society is all about. This type of music will surely keep away large animals and probably tribe members. I could manage with these things, one thing, what about one food or one drink. Just a thought.

Well, I too like this week's blog because it is light thinking and not controversial. I have thought of this but of course food was a thought also and like Larry us girls always had the sexy guy appear.

The magazine I would like get is Southern Living. I like this magazine because it covers Southern hot spots to vacation at, delicious recipes, and design. Also there is always a house plan that if I won the lottery I would always build. This magazine covers every area that I am interested in.

My movie would be hands down "You've Got Mail". It is my all time favorite movie in the world. I have seen it just a huge number of times. I laugh everytime I watch it. It kinda hits a soft spot to me because that is the way I found my guy, on the internet. I really can relate to it and it has the type humor that is on the top. You don't have to think about it, just enjoy it.

My music would have to be Celine Dion's greatest hits. If I had to choose a single song, it would have been I Drove All Night but anything she sings is just soothing and calming for me. It would be the perfect music when Mr. Gorgeous washes up because in my dreams he always does. So why would this time be any different?

I think that the magazine I would like to wash up on shore every week would be "Time." The magazine keeps up with current issues national and internationally. I would be nice to know what is going on back in civilization, even if I never was rescued.

I think the movie I would like to have on the island would be "Awakenings." The movie stars Robin Williams as a doctor and Robert DeNiro as a patient who is a victim of an encephalitis epidemic that has left him catatonic for many years. The doctor discovers a new drug that offers the prospect of reviving him. Great movie about the strength of human will power and compassion.

The album I would like to have loaded on my mp3 player would have to be "Dark Side of the Moon" by Pink Floyd, no question. Every song on the album is a tribute to the immense talent of the group. The haunting lyrics and instrumentals are some of the best in rock music history.

The magazine choice is easy, but perhaps a bit unusual. South Mississippi Living is a relatively local publication that features people and places in the southern…mostly coastal…part of the state. It’s well written, beautifully photographed, and provides a professionally prepared presentation of life on the coast. Were I stranded on an island, I would think that my driving ambition would be to return home. And what better way to pursue that goal than to be regularly reminded of that ambition?
Since movies are primarily for entertainment and providing mental escapes, the choice there is also easy. Nothing does it for me better than the old classic Animal House. While the plot borders on the inane, my recollections of similar experiences remain vivid enough that I can associate names of people I know with virtually every character in the movie. The actors did an outstanding job of capturing the attitudes of their characters and the society of the time. I always feel better for having seen it.
The musical selection is a little tougher. I’m one of the guys that values lyrics far more than the melodies, so when I look for preferences, it has to convey the message in the words. Of course, a little cleverness and originality never hurts. I considered two of my all-time list leaders, The Eagles and Jimmy Buffet. While The Eagles hold a clear edge in musicianship, both they and Buffet are recognized as outstanding and original storytellers. But in the end, I have to go with another lesser known group and album, the Isaac’s Songs of the Faith. If you were truly stranded and alone, mental and emotional strength and faith would seem to be the thing that would be most necessary to get you through.

I would request for Reader’s Digest to wash ashore every week. Since it’s a monthly publication, I guess I would have to request back issues during the off weeks. I don’t really read magazines, but Reader’s Digest is what I read when it’s available. It has happy inspirational stories, as well as cheesy humor sections.

My movie choice would probably be Sweet Home Alabama. I just really enjoy the movie. I don’t really have a favorite movie, but this one’s probably close.

My album would probably have to be Wow Hits 2008. This album includes Christian hits from 2008. I would certainly need the inspiration if I was stranded on a deserted island. I’d also need something to help me keep my focus on God.

Stranded on a island without any possibilities of being saved, Playboy. Besides the obvious pictorials, the magazine actually has really good articles. The interview pieces are incredible, you get a real feel of who the interviewed people are. Beautiful women to keep my mind off the terrible circumstance I find myself in, and good articles to keep my mind fresh and entertained.

Rush Hour 3 would be my movie of choice. This movie is hilarious from start to finish. It is rare that I find a movie that entertains me completly, but this movie does. Chris Tucker is at his best in this movie, he needs to consider doing a stand up routine. This movie would help to keep my mind off the situation a bit. Sometimes laughing can help keep you from crying, especially in a situation where noway out is visable.

"Keep Your Head Up" by Tupac Shakur. This song describes dire situations that people find themselves in, and how they need to stay strong to overcome the situations. All the encouragement I could get would be a huge benefit for me.

If a magazine were to wash up on the shore, I would want it to be Christian Living. To me, the most important thing would be for me to get spiritually fed. Reading God's message would give me hope and strength. Also, it would keep my mind off of things of the world and I could focus on growing closer with God. Since I couldn't have the Bible, I would have to take the next best thing.
If a movie were to wash up on the beach, I would want it to be something on survival. Eventhough I have no idea what movies deal with survival, this type of movie would be the most beneficial. If I was just deserted on a island, I would not know the first thing about how to survive. All I would know to do is lay on the sand and get a tan. Therefore, I would need something that could help me survive on my own, since I have never done that.
If I were to have one cd, it would have a be a mixed cd. I would want different kinds of music because I would get tired of hearing the same artist day after day. If there was a variety of music on the cd, I could have a song for all my different moods. One day I might be in the mood for country and the next, I might want classical, but with a mix, I could satisfy all my needs. I would not get tired of the same song because I could just listen to one song a day. That way, by the time I started listening to the song again, it would be new in my mind.

If I had to choose one magazine to wash up on shore I would have a hard time choosing between Time and Mississippi magazine because I like politics but I also love Mississippi. I would probably choose Time though because I would want to know what is going on in America and around the world. Maybe I could also learn about nearby ships or something.

The movie I would want is All The Pretty Horses. I like this movie because I have always loved horses and this movie really does have a lot of "pretty horses." I also like the love story in it.

If I had to choose one album I would pick Iris Dement's album Lifeline. This an album full of bluegrass gospel songs that never gets old to me. It would probably make me feel protected and hopeful if I was on a deserted island.

vSo here's my media related question to you this week. Write a short paragraph on each:

1. If you were stranded on an island, what magazine would you like to wash up onshore every week? And why?

Answer: I would like The Barrel Horse News magazine to appear onshore. We are very envolved in horses and compete in barrel race compititions almost every weekend. This would keep us up to date on the comititions and what's going on in the barrel horse world.

2. If you were stranded on an island, what one movie would you like to take with you (in a portable dvd player, of course)? And why?
Answer: Parent Trap is one of the cutest movies, and I laugh every time I watch it! This is just a fun uplifting movie that is fun to watch everytime I watch it!

3. If you were stranded on an island, what one album/song would you like to be loaded on the mp3 player you took with you? And why?

Answer: I love Toby Keith and he has so many songs that are upbeat and uplifting. I think his music would lift your spirits and give you something to make you feel good.

If I was stranded on an island, I would want Outdoor Life. Hunting and fishing is not my passion, but I would want the survival tips and methods of catching food. While I am here I like Cosmo, but I don't think sex tips or celebrity fashion would do me much good if I was alone with no one to impress or to have sex with.

My favorite movie of all time is Shag. I have watched it so, many times that I have memorized the lines. The plot is cheesy, but it is a fun movie to watch. The movie has good actresses and great music. It is just an all-around feel good movie that would make me feel better about being trapped somewhere.

The album that I would take is the Appetite for Destruction by Guns-N-Roses. I like almost every song on the cd and the beats provide a rush that always improve my mood. I also think that it would make me think of Paradise City, even if I was a thousand miles away with water as far as I could see.

I do not read magazines so this is a difficult question. However, I am very interested in politics and if I found myself stranded on an island I would probably want to see Time magazine appear each week. I would certainly want some way of knowing what was happening elsewhere around the world.

My movie of choice would be "White Heat" featuring James Cagney. Aside from the entertainment aspect, it exemplifies a time when cinema still relied on great acting rather than special effects.

The album I would take with me would be Merle Haggard's greatest hits. Many of his songs involved the feelings of loneliness and isolation associated with being locked in prison. I imagine I would experience many of the same feelings if I was stranded alone on an island.

If I were stranded on an island, I would want Time magazine to wash up onshore every week. My reason for wanting this to be the magazine that washes up is because I would want to know what is going on in the world considering this would be my only media source for news.

If I were stranded on an island, I would like to take Step Brothers with me. The reason this would be the DVD I would take with me would be because this movie makes me laugh and I love it. Considering I will have no contact with anyone, I will be needing a good laugh so this movie would do it for me.

If I were stranded on an island, the one album I would take with me would be T.I.'s Paper Trail. I would choose this CD because I find a couple of the songs to be somewhat inspirational and just because that is my favorite CD at the moment.

Great topic. We are expecting a "light snow" here in KY this evening so be stranded on a beach doesn't sound bad at all.

The magazine that I would like to receive would be a magazine that would give me the news from the mainland. If I could stretch the definition of magazine, I would like to receive the USA Today. I could get the US and national news, the finance news, the sports as well as the entertainment news all with one publication. I would be able to stay conected with the outside world and would not be so behind if I happened to be rescued.

The movie would be a toss-up between "Christmas Vacation" with Chevy Chase and Randy Quaid or "Tommy Boy" with David Spade and Chris Farley. I would definitely need a good laugh and these two movies can make me laugh day after day.

As far as one CD goes, I would definitely like a mix of music so I would choose the best "Classic Hits of the 70's". In my opinion, the music from the 70's will never be rivaled by the music that was produced before or after it. I would definitely need the variety to keep my mind busy as I'm stranded on the island.

I would like Woman's World to wash up because this magazine has all tips in using house hold items or regular food. I have found ways to beat stress by eating certain healthy foods that grow from the earth. I have found healthy ways to sleep better.
I would take Twilight because it is my favorite movie so far this year. If I were stranded I would like to watch some good looking guys from time to time. Also, it would help me take the edge of being alone on an island.
I like all sorts of music but I would like to listen to Iron and Wine. There music is so indy and low key. It helps me relax and enjoy the better things in life.

If I were stranded on an island I would like a new issue of Martha Stewart Living to wash up every week. I really enjoy decorating, cooking and crafts. These things would keep me distracted from the fact that I was stranded. And, maybe with Martha’s ideas I could decorate my little shake nicely. Also, the magazine could prove helpful. There are many recipes with fresh food. This could tell me foods that may be safe to eat on the island and how to prepare them properly.
If I were stranded on an island I think I would take the Gilligan’s Island dvd. It is always nice to have something to relate to right? Plus, when stranded on an island some comic relief would be nice. I may be able to learn a thing or two from the group’s activities on the show. Plus, having a dvd with a few episodes on it would give me a quick break from a day of hunting and gathering.
If I were stranded on an island I would like Jimmy Buffets Mother Ocean loaded on my MP3 played. My choice would be Margaretville but I think that would just be depressing considering I do not know how to distill my own alcohol. I think that Mother Ocean is a relaxing song and I would be in the mood for the song because I would be slightly depressed and on the water. Plus, I just enjoy this song.

If you were stranded on an Island

1. What magazine would you like to wash up onshore every week and why?

If I was to be stranded on an island I would like a magazine that gives survival tips and nifty ideas on how to make life in a rural area more comfortable. I looked it up on the internet and the UK offers such a magazine. They offer the Bushcraft and survival skills magazine. This magazine gives tips in different situations on how to survive and get through them. Kind of like a written survival man show. How he goes and gets lost in the dessert and then tells you what is good to eat, drink ect to survive in that area or situation.

2. What movie would you like to take with you. Well since I decide on a survival magazine I would want a movie that would make me laugh. Something that would keep me sane, and keep my spirits up. I currently really liked the movie – Maid of Honor so I would take that with me.

3. What one album / song would you like to be loaded on the mp3 player you took with you.

Well I just saw Brad paisley in concert at the Houston Rodeo this week so I would want his new album PLAY. He has songs from sweet and loving, patriotic and some songs are just down right hilarious. I think his album would be uplifting and yet somber and sweet at the same time. I really like the song ‘I’m a Man” or something like that it reminds me of my husband. He so rough and tough and would never in a million years do any metro activities like wax his eyebrows or get a pedicure and this song just is tailor made for him.

If I were stranded on an island and I had to choose a magazine that I wanted to wash ashore every week, I would have to choose Southern Living because I love the pictures and articles in that magazine. I just really think it a great magazine that epitomizes "Southern Living."

A movie I would take with me, if I were stranded on an island, would be Mamma Mia. I love musicals and I love Greece and greek culture. Since the movie is a musical, I would also have some music that I could listen to as well.

And finally, if I had one album that I could put on my Ipod I would choose an album with a variety of music from the 60's,
70's, and 80's because that is the music that I love. That is the music that pretty much expresses who I am as a person.

The magazine would have to be ESPN the Magazine. I am a sports junkie. And even thou the magazine isnt quite like Sports Center it would be the closes thing to it. If you could wash up a flat screen with direct tv for access to ESPN that would be much better..

The movie would have to be Wedding Crashers. I have proboly sceen that movie at least 20 times and always laugh at every sceen. I can almost say the movie word for word and never get tired of seeing it. Vince Vaughn is oe of the funniest actors out there. Plus he seems like the kind of guy you could just hangout with. And it does show a little nudity which would come in handy there Im sure.

The album would be Red White and Crew. That is motley crews greaest hits. I have seen them in concert bout a dozen times and most recently in New Orleans. Love all the songs on there. Plus who wouldnt want to be in a rock band.. Tommy Lee, Nikki Sixx, Vince Neil and Mick Mars are the greatest.

I would want outdoor living magazine. The reason is simple in that I would want to survive until I was found or at least know what to do with all of my free time.

The DVD I would want with me on the island would be "The Graduate". The reason for this is that there is so many different interactions on several different levels that it would keep my mind busy trying to figure out all of the metaphors and uses of symbols.

I would want to have the album "Jesus Freak" by dc Talk. This is an oldie but a goodie in that all of my childhood memories come to mind when I here the song. It is also spiritual as well as uplifting and insiring.

The magazine I would take with me would be Newsweek. I would like to be able to read about current events while I am waiting to rejoin civilization. I would go crazy not knowing what was happening in the world.

I would probably download the movie "Castaway" with Tom Hanks. I like this movie because of the humor and realism of what could actually occur while stranded on an island.

I am old school and would take a Stevie Wonder album. Stevie Wonder has been a favorite of mine for as long as I can remember. The album of his I would take is In Square Circle. There is a song on the album called "Whereabouts". I like this song a lot. I would probably be thinking of my love if he was not there with me.

I am really bad in this game because I am very indecisive and moreover I don't have one favorite thing in any of the mentioned things so my answers will be kind of generalized.

I am not a magazine reader, so I cannot give you the name of the magazine, but I would like to read something that is a mix of everything, for example wellness, stories, health, sports, fun, mysterious things and anything valuable that would contribute to my knowledge and personal growth.

I am somebody who cannot watch one movie over and over in a short period of time. That's why I would probably find a very complicated movie, which I did not get for 100%, so I can watch it over and over until I understand it in a detail haha.

I don't know which album I would choose since recently I listen to so many different artists and kinds of music. That's why, if I could I would like my play list from my computer to be on my mp3 player. If it should be just one song then maybe No Air.

If I were stranded on an island I feel I would need some serious entertainment for the boring days so I think I would go with People magazine. I think this would be the best choice because there would be absolutley no dull articles but more funny stuff and some they do have some good articles sometimes. If I didn't need the entertainment I would go with Newsweek to stay current on what was going on in the world.

I have so many movies I like so this one is hard for me to pick. I love all the girly movies. I think I could watch pretty woman a hundred times soo I will just go with that. I watched Independence Day recently and I think that is a movie I could watch over and over again as well.

The music one was hard because it always depends on my mood. I will just go ahead and say Sugarland's new CD because they have upbeat and slow songs. Most of their songs are fun and you can groove to them well.

If i were to choose one magazine to read, it would have to be Runners World. Running is one of my passions in life, and this magazine keeps me up to speed on running. The articles also include motivational stories that provide inspiration to run. Being stranded on an island would not keep me from running! The running would help me stay focused, allow me to explore the island, and find food.

I would want to watch Little Miss Sunshine. It's one of my fav movies, and it keeps me laughing.

I would choose Journey's Greatest Hits for the music. This is my all time favorite album, and it keeps me happy. I could sing along all day long without any worries!

If I was strande on an island, I would like to have any kind of entertainment magazine wash up, so I can stay up-to-date with the latest trends and news. I wouldn't feel completely cutt off from the world. It would be a magazine that equally covered African-Americans, Caucasions, Latinos, Asians, and other races. I cannot think of a specific magazine right now.

I would like to take the movie, Madea's Family Reunion with me. I would like to watch this movie so I can laugh and not be sad all the time. I also would like to listen to Alicia Key's album, "As I Am." I feel her songs would give me courage, motivate me, and soothe me.
