Stranded on an Island

Hello all,
I once saw a news piece where a journalist asked the presidential candidates what book they would take with them to the White House. That's a neat question and it reminded me of that old question, "If you were stranded on an island........"

So here's my media related question to you this week. Write a short paragraph on each:

1. If you were stranded on an island, what magazine would you like to wash up onshore every week? And why?

2. If you were stranded on an island, what one movie would you like to take with you (in a portable dvd player, of course)? And why?

3. If you were stranded on an island, what one album/song would you like to be loaded on the mp3 player you took with you? And why?

Good Luck

1. Not being a big reader of any type of magazine, this is a tough decision for me. I believe I would choose something that would help to keep me informed about our world, U.S. News. With this reporting magazine format, I would have a brief glimpse of the details of the goings on in my absence.
2. SWEET HOME ALABAMA – This is a very sweet and innocent movie. The main characters are husband/wife and together since childhood, but now going through a divorce. It has a perfect ending of true love. I would choose this because it is a ‘happy’ movie not evoking any negative emotions. I would imagine being stranded on an island would completely depress someone and a good feeling now and then would be great!
3.The EAGLES-GREATEST HITS. These songs were originated during my college years and have left an emotional mark on my life. I have never tired of hearing any of them, even when played over and over during a senior road trip. They each express a feeling very aptly and causes you to think about your how your own life is going.

If I were stranded on a desert island, I would like for the magazine Ebony to wash upon shore each week. I would choose this magazine because it is one of the oldest African American magazines, as well as on the most successful magazines. Another reason why I would choose this magazine is because it reports on a variety of information. Not only does this magazine focus on beauty and clothes (my specialty), but this magazine also gives me a monthly dose of information about political news, religious news, educational news, national, and international news as well. Ebony also reports info about living life period, movies, music, careers, and money. My favorite section of the Ebony magazine is where the financial managers attempt to help an individual budget their monthly income by providing them with substitutes for their routine spending habits, and budgeting advice.

The one movie that I would take with me would be the movie Obsessed featuring Idris Elba, Beyonce Knowles, and Ali Carter. I would choose this movie because it tells a tale of a family weathering the obsessions of an extremely crazed stalker. I would also choose this movie because Idris plays such a good role in this movie.

If I were stranded on a desert island, I would have to take Gucci's song "Gorgeous" with me because it describes ME! I am so GORGEOUS. Another reason I would choose this song is because I just love the beats and melodies of the song, they just seem to fit the words, kinda like a puzzle being put together.

The first question is easy. If I were stranded on an island and had to pick one magazine to float to shore each week it would definately be People magazine. I have to run into a store and get one every week to keep up with the latest celebrity gossip. I love reading this magazine and it would definately keep me entertained on an island.

To answer the second question, I would take the movie My Best Friends Wedding. It has been my favorite movie since I was young. I used to love Julia Roberts. It is a movie about two best friends who used to date but now he is getting married and she has decided that she wants him back. It doesnt end how you think it would though, so I think that is what I really like about the movie. It would never get old, so that is another reason I would take this movie.

And finally, I would have trouble picking just one song. But one artist that I really like is Taylor Swift, so I would probably take her Fearless album. I really like every song on it and they are all very different and fit different moods.

1. Something useful in a magazine might be nice. No sense in knowing about world events if you are that isolated, maybe a fishing magazine, or a raft building magazine would be useful. For purely enjoyment purposes probably National geographic.
2. The movie Castaway is great and would be funny in an ironic sort of way. Otherwise the Usual Suspects is one of my all time favorite movies. It is one of the few movies to throw me a curve at the end.
3. Album wise would be any U2 album or any Dandy Warhols album. I love both these bands and even though I own tons of music I listen to them more than any other. I never seem to get tired of them.

1 - I agree with Mark. If I am stranded on an island, I don't think I'll much care about what's going on in Hollywood. I'll want to know how to build stuff to get myself off the island. So a magazine like Combat and Survival would probably be helpful or, ideally, a magazine put out by Bear Grylls (Man vs. Wild).

2 - I would take the movie Twilight, and if I could take books, it would be the Twilight series. Even though the movie is not as good as the books, I could imagine while I watched it. So romantic, and they are my absolute favorite.

3 - My first thought was to take my husband's album, but his songs are not the most uplifting - not something I would need if I were stranded on an island. I'd be battling depression already. So, I think I would need something lively, like a Bee Gee's album - something that would get me up dancing and singing. The Rocky soundtrack would be a good choice too - very motivational.

I'm not by any means an avid magazine subscriber. I recently moved in with a roommate who gets magazines shipped to the house by the bundle. Rolling Stone, US, People...everything is at my house. I never really took much interest in any of them. If I had to choose one, it would probably be ESPN magazine for the mere entertainment it offers.

While I don't spend much time in the magazine world, I am an avid movie watcher. Thus, this question is very difficult. If it was allowed, I would take The Office: Season 3. Since the instructions were to bring only one, I would have to choose Forrest Gump for a few reasons. It is a classic for one. Secondly, it is a long movie which could occupy my time. Lastly, its "feel good" theme and quotable lines would give me cheer while being stranded.

If I could cheat the system, I would take a burned mix of my favorite hits from Michael Jackson, Ben Harper, and my other favorites. I'm not 100% behind this decision, but I would probably take Michael Jackson's greatest hits. This decision is definitely the hardest of the three.

1. If I had to have a magazine to wash up on the shore, I would probably chose Triathlete magazine. I would chose this magazine because it is the only magazine that I am currently subscribed to. Triathlete magazine is full of information specifically tailored to triathletes, such as national rankings, gear reviews, and training tips. I enjoy reading it to keep me at the top of my triathlete game, however, if I was stranded on an Island, I don't see that I would reap much benefit from that reading...

2.Men of Honor. It is my all time favorite movie. To me, the main point of the movie is, no matter what the challenge, never quit. I think that would come in handy while stranded on an island. Seeing Carl Brashear's sheer dedication and never-say-die attitude would help me push on and survive to make it off of that island.

3. I would probably take a Bob Marley album that I have. I am not sure what the name of the album is, but a few songs include: "Don't Worry, Be Happy", "Three Little Birds", "Is This Love". It may be a greatest hits album. Anyway, I would take it because the songs are upbeat and make you have a positive attitude. And, for some reason they make me think of island-type settings, which would go wel with the scenery, after all, I am stranded on an Island!!

If I were stranded on an island the magazine I would like to wash up on shore would be Poets and Writers Magazine. The reason I chose this bi-monthly is because I love to read poetry and hear about new books coming out; this magazine also has contests for poets, and I love the tips it gives on writing. If I were on an island, I'd spend my time writing because there would be all this beautiful ocean, palm trees, and tropic life, so I would find instant inspiration on the Mediterranean.

If I were stranded on an island the one movie I would take would be Casablanca because I love how nonchalant, cool, and mesmerizing Humphrey Bogart is in this old movie. I love this movie because of the espionage, and the lost love theme. If I wre on an island I would like to be with a lost love or find true love, and how romantic a setting it would be than on a tropical island; fantasies would come true for me.

If I were stranded on an island the one album I would take would be "A Love Supreme" by Chante' Moore because this is a love filled album, and since I am stranded I would just try to make the best of my life until I could get home. Hopefully, this island would have other people on it, however, if I was totally by myself I would not bother with these things, but for this assignment these are the things I would take.

I don’t read magazines so I am going to agree with Mark and pick something useful such as Bushcraft and Survival magazine. I am hoping that the magazine will help me survive on the island, if not I can always use the paper to start a fire or something.

The movie I would take is Office Space, because after a few days I would need a good laugh, and also the movie would remind me to take advantage of the island and use it as a vacation.

The album that I would want to have is Hysteria by def Leppard, this is just one of my favorite albums and I never get tired of listening to the songs, which may come in handy if I am stranded on an island.

1. The magaizine I would take is Cosmopolitan, I honestly havent missed an issue in years so there is no way I could survive without this magazine. The only problem is this magizne is issued once a month, not a week. However, I would rather get this magazine once a month than a different magaizne every week.
2. The one movie I would take is Sex and the City, I would try to cheat and take the series of the tv show on DVD but either way I would have to take this movie/series because the show never fails to make me laugh and make a bad day better. It is also the one movie/show I can watch over and over and that is a very appealing idea when stuck on an island.
3. The album is Bob Marley's greatest hits album. Bob Marley always makes me happy so I know with his album I would probably enjoy the island a lot more.

If I were stranded on an island these are the things I would take:

1. I love how-to magazines and cooking magazines, but I guess seeing as how I would not be doing much cooking while stranded on an island I would probably choose something to keep me entertained. I would choose a women's magazine like Elle with lots of fashion, news, and interesting articles and fashion photography.
2. The one movie I would have to take would be Funny Face. Honestly, any Audrey Hepburn movie would keep me more than content but I love the music and cinematography in this film and I could watch it over and over again.
3. I would have to take an album and it is a very close race between about five of the Beatles albums. I think in the end, I would have to choose Abbey Road. There are no tracks on that album that are skippable and they are all, in my opinion, some of the Beatle's best!

If I were stranded on an island the magazine I would like to wash up would be Reader’s Digest. I like that magazine. It has stories that are inspiring. It has jokes in it. The magazine is monthly.
The movie I would bring is legally blonde. I think it is funny movies. The movies show that you can do anything you want to do in life. One must just work at it to get the things they want in life. It would make me think it is possible to get of the island.
I'm not sure what album I would bring. I think would bring a mix of music but if could not I would bring Garth Brooks greatest hits.

If I was stranded on an island I would want the bible to be washed up on shore. Of course this would be the only source of reading material that I would need. It has all questions, and the answers that pertain to them inside.

What movie would I want to take with me? This is a hard question, but I would have to pick ONE of my favorite movies. If I was alone, and my family was not with me I would want a home movie so that I could see my family everyday. I have 3 daughters and 1 son, and they mean the world to me! My husband means the world to me also! My granddaughter is 2 years old, and my second daughter is expecting a son in January.

The song that I would like loaded on my MP3 player would not really be a song, but it would be a recording. I would want the voices of my children and my husband. I would not want to forget their voices, so I would like to listen to them everyday, or when I became sad or lonely!

I like the Castaway movie also. I guess it really goes with the questionnable subject here.

The one magazine I would prefer to have wash onto shore each week would be Newsweek. This would enable me to stay abreast of everything that is going on in the world. The cover news, entertainment, celebrities, etc.

The movie I would like to have with me would be The Lord of the Rings. I think this movie would keep me encouraged and help me remember that no matter what difficulties I might be experiencing, true friendship and loyalty can always overcome what life throws at you!

The cd I would like to have would be the one of my cousin playing hymns from our church hymnal. I believe it would be comforting and challenge my mind to remember all the words to the songs.

These are some very difficult questions! I am not a very big magazine reader, so it would be hard for me to choose one to wash up onshore. I think I would prefer to have a notebook and a pen so that I could write down my own thoughts and feelings or perhaps a newspaper of some sort. I think being able to see and read about what was going on in the world might be a bit frustrating though!

As far as movies are concerned, I would want to have a home movie, or something that was a compilation of several home movies. If my children and husband were not with me, I would go crazy if I could not see them every day. Watching movies of them would never be boring :)

I love listening to music so this one is probably the most difficult question! I would have to say that I would take Sean Paul's CD The Trinity because it is one that I always have in my car. No matter what sort of mood I am in, whenever I listen to it I always cheer up and just feel like dancing. I am certain that I would need alot of cheer if I was stranded on an island!

Ashley Johnson

Dr. Williams, what would you take?

I would like for a copy of Sports Illustrated to wash up weekly. I love following sports. If I were able to keep up with what was happening, it would give me a small feeling of being home. I just hope that they put in a plastic bag.
This one is a hard one to narrow down. If I can only have one I would go with Pulp Fiction. I have no reason, I just really like the movie. It is one I would be able to tolerate watching over and over. What kind of batteries are in this portable DVD player?
My song would be Alleluia by John Cale form the movie Shrek. He does an excellent job of singing this song.

1. I'd like to have Print magazine on my deserted island. I never tire of looking at other people's graphics work. I like the articles too. I keep all my issues so I can look at them over and over.
2. The movie I'd take with me is An Affair to Remember with Debra Kerr and Carey Grant. It doesn't matter how many times I watch that movie, I always enjoy watching it again. I don't know any other movie that I can say that about. When I watch the dialogue and body language between the characters played by Grant and Kerr, I am entranced. It's almost as if they are really in love and are meant for each other. It's like watching a mythical creature. Does this type of relationship really exist? I'm going to go watch it again and see if I can figure that one out.
3. Since it is a deserted Island, I think I'll have to take Etta James, Blue Gardenia. That's my I'm alone and I don't care CD. I love to sing along with her and a deserted island is the best place for me to practice my singing.
