Stranded on an Island

Hello all,
I once saw a news piece where a journalist asked the presidential candidates what book they would take with them to the White House. That's a neat question and it reminded me of that old question, "If you were stranded on an island........"

So here's my media related question to you this week. Write a short paragraph on each:

1. If you were stranded on an island, what magazine would you like to wash up onshore every week? And why?

2. If you were stranded on an island, what one movie would you like to take with you (in a portable dvd player, of course)? And why?

3. If you were stranded on an island, what one album/song would you like to be loaded on the mp3 player you took with you? And why?

Good Luck

If I were stranded on an island the magazine that I would have to have would be my Southern Living. I would need my Southern Living so that I would have great recipes to prepare because I am assuming that there will be no fast food restaurants so I will have to cook. Also, I could get decorating ideas for my little hut that will be made of twigs and straw.

The only movie I would care to have on a deserted island is Dirty Dancing. My reasons for this are simple I figure with all the extra time I will have I will finally have time to learn all those dance steps and second what can be more entertaining that watching Patrick Swazye.

Gnarls Barkley's song Crazy would definitely be the song that I would choose because I would have to be crazy to be on that island to begin with because I don't like being any where near or around water.

When I first started thinking about this question at hand, I wanted to find a magazine that would tell me how to survive. With a little bit of research and no luck, I came to the conclusion of just receiving a magazine I would enjoy.

For the magazine, I would have to say Cosmopolitan. It is very entertaining and is normally a decent size so there is plenty to read. Also, most of the stories are ones that you can read over and over.

Since I am being entertained by the magazine I have chosen, for the dvd I would have to say a season of Survivor. I need to brush up on my surviving skills, so that would be a good resource.

When it comes to a song, I would have to go with my favorite one at this time. Dear God, by Avenged Sevenfold would keep me entertained for a good amount of time. The only problem with songs, is that when you listen to them for too long, you get sick of them.

Each of these have their specific purposes and I would hope they would help me in the best way.

The first thing that comes to mind is that I would NOT want a news magazine. Were I stranded on an island, not knowing if rescue would ever come, I would not want to concern myself with the worries of the world. I suspect I would want something clever and entertaining. This could come in the form of serialized sci-fi tales. If I had an unlimited supply of working writing utensils, I think I would opt for a game magazine. I would prefer lots of crossword puzzles, but also logic puzzles, hidden word, and acrostics.

I attended Georgia Tech for a year in the late '80s. During that time, I had the Star Wars trilogy on one VCR tape. I would come home from school, pop a large paper bag full of popcorn, and watch the whole trilogy over and over again. Arguing that The Lord of the Rings is a single book/movie spread across three films, I would opt for that movie today. Tolkien's The Hobbit was my first real read. I have been a huge fan ever since. Even after seeing these films numerous times, I can lose myself in them easily.

The music question is the toughest for me to answer as I do not actively listen to music. However, I love the sound of Celtic music. Given a chance to choose only one, I would pick an 80s Enya album!

As for the magazine, that's an easy question to answer. My favorite would be "Mother Earth News." I've been receiving "Mother Earth News" for quite a few years.

As for a movie, I'm not quite sure as I haven't really watched many movies lately. But, my all time faovorite stars Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn in "The African Queen." Katharine Hepburn was a missionary in Africa during World War I. She met a quite drunken Humphrey Bogart after her brother was killed and persuaded him to use his little boat to attack an enemy warship. Ah, just the thought of those two wonderful actors gives me goosebumps!

The song that I've always cherished is "Dust in the Wind" by Kansas. When I die, I've requested that this song be played at my funeral. The words hold the meaning that all we really are is dust in the wind. Usually before a person dies, it is said that they have little clips of their past flash through their mind. Hence, the words "all my dreams pass before my eyes with curiosity." It tells all my loved ones " . . . don't hang on, nothin' lasts forever but the earth and sky." This is the way I want to be remembered by my family and friends; a perfect song till the end.

If I were stranded on an island, I would like for Family Circle Magazine to wash up on shore, because it talks about family and home. It is a magazine that centers around the family. If I were stranded on a deserted island that is all I would be thinking about would be my family. It also offers some fun activity ideas and while I am stranded on this island maybe I could put those ideas to good use.

If I were stranded on an island, the one movie that I would like to take with me (in a portable dvd player, of course) probably would be The Titanic, but we all know how that turned out. It would not do me any good to look at that. That would depress me. So I guess I would have to pick Imitations of Life. I just love the acting of Lana Turner. I also love the gospel singing of Mahalia Jackson that was in the movie. That really would uplift me. I like all the glamour in the movie and I just loved the outfits that Lana Turner wore. While I am on this island, I can at least dream of a glamorous life.

If I were stranded on an island, the one song I would like to be loaded on the mp3 player would be “No One in the World” by Anita Baker. Not only is she one of my favorite singers, but I would probably feel like there was no one in the world but me.

If I were stranded on an island it would be a blessing to have TIME magazine wash up on shore. I would want to know what is going on in the United States and around the world. TIME magazine usually does a good job informing viewers on various topics such as politics, entertainment, sports, world affairs, and more.
"Dances With Wolves" would be the movie I would take to watch on my island. The movie would provide a source of entertainment and inspiration. The movie would be relevant to my situation on the island and it would inspire me to be adventurous.
Bob Marley's "Everythings Gonna Be Alright" would be the song I would listen to daily. I would need a song that would keep me positive but also have a vacation type feeling to it. In saying that, I think the song is very multi-purposed and would be an excellent song to have with me.

1.If you were stranded on an island, what magazine would you like to wash up onshore every week? And why?

I would like the Time Magazine to wash a shore every week. Within this magazine, there are articles about what is going on in the world. So, even if I was not able to be a part of the world, I could still be informed. I would have the feeling of still being involved.

2. If you were stranded on an island, what one movie would you like to take with you (in a portable dvd player, of course)? And why?

I would like the movie Seven Brides for Seven Brothers to wash a shore. I love this movie. It is very comical, and it has a good meaning. Also, this film has seven handsome guys in the film, so life would not be too bad.

3. If you were stranded on an island, what one album/song would you like to be loaded on the mp3 player you took with you? And why?

I would like any CD from Dean Martin. Dean Martin is one of my favorite artist. I cannot pick a certain album of his. Most of his songs have a happy tune. So, any of them would work.

If I were stranded on an island, the magazine I would like to wash up would be National Geographic. This has been my favorite magazine and I am rarely bored reading it. It would also keep me informed about the outside world. It may also help me identify any animals I may come across.
If I were stranded on an island, the one movie I would want with me is Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. It is one of the few movies that I can watch over and over. Plus, the knight at the end of the movie is stuck guarding the cups for hundreds of years. If he can deal with a life of solitude, so can I. I can also tell you that the one movie that I sure would not want to have is Cast Away. It would remind me of my plight.
As far as music is concerned, I don’t have any single song that I couldn’t live without. But, if I were stranded on an island, it would have to be some type of praise song. Listening to it would help me remember that I am not alone in the world and it would keep my spirits up.

If I were stranded on an island I think I would pick southern living magazine (like Mary Catherin) I love to cook and try new things so Im sure I would have plenty of time. If I could have that I would have to have Rachel Rays magazine not only would I get intertanment I would get recipes and other ideals.
If it is in the next year I would want to take The Blind side. I loved this movie even if he went to Old Miss. I went to the movies 3times to see it.This movie touched my life and also taught my son its not only about the game. However, if I had to pick one from now it would be Fireproof. This dvd saved my marriage of 8years. The Lord not only touched my life but also my husbands to.
My mp3 play is ready to go all the time. It doesn't have just one ablum but it has many of my favorite songs that make me smile of think back to different times. Sugareland, Jason Crabb, Creed, Jason Aldean, Carrie Underwood beacuse all of these songs mean something to me there is a reason for them being on my mp3 player. I surely would be entertainted with all 3 of these things, I just hope I would have things to help me survive.

If I was stranded on the island and was offered a magazine to be washed on my shore, I would pick the Backpacker magazine. I am a practical man, and having a magazine that has useful tips for outdoor survival will be essential to me. I wouldn't want to choose the celebrity magazine or world news magazine because it will not be practical in this situation. On the other hand, feeling connected to the world will be important to me and will give me hope. Also, I wouldn't want a family magazine simply because I wouldn't want to be reminded about my family every single time I will look at the cover. I will definitely understand that my situation is dire and that I will always think about my family.

The movie that I would like to watch in this situation will be Robinson Crusoe movie. This movie is also practical in this situation since I will be able to relate to it. But most importantly, it will give me hope for the rescue and liberation. This hope will keep me going all of the time that I will be stranded. It is funny, but if I encounter any indigenous tribes, I will be able to communicate with them if I showed them a movie.

I don't really listen to the music a lot, but it would be useful to have only the positive and uplifting kind of music on the island. This can be hip-hop, drum and base, uplifting trance or house music. Something that will help me keep going. A compilation would be nice.

I would probably say mens health. There wouldnt be too much to do out there except to work out and i would probably have to stay in shape to survive. Since i would be the only one on the island it would be good to at least some pictures of a girl too.

I would take one of the Lord of the Rings movies. Those movies are some of my favorite, plus the extended versions are 4 and a half hours long so they could at least take up a decent chunck of time.

I would take my Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble greatest hits cd. My favorite musician is SRV and plus im sure i would have the blues alone on an island so it seems like a perfect fit.

If I were stranded on an island the magazine that I would have to have would be Family Magazine. This is a really good book to browse or to just read. It have different stuff that you may want to try out that may benefit you in more ways than one.

The one movie that will help me out will be the Season of Survivor. It will help to give me some pointers on how to survive while I'm stranded so that I want be panicing while I'm stranded.

The one song on my mp3 player would be Never Would Have Made It, by Marvin Sapp, its and uplifting song and it justifies that you can pull through anything that you are facing if you only believe in him.

The one magazine I would take with me if I was stranded on an island is probably going to be national Geographic's. The magazine is chopped full of knowledge about land and it also tells about animals and what is happening in the world. Most people who are my age would want some tabloid magazine such as seventeen, star or OK magazine; but i would personally rather read something more educational about my well-being.

The one movie that i would take with me if i was stranded on an island is probably going to be some sort of kiddy movie or romantic comedy such as finding nemo or wall-e or the notebook or pretty woman. Those movies can brighten my day no matter how mad or upset i am, and if i am on an island stranded, that is not a choice i will most likely be upset. the kiddy movies make you laugh and smile even when the worst times of someone's life is happening.

The one song that i would put on my mp3 player would most likely be lean on me or some sort of inspirational some like that. When i am in that state of mind where i feel like i have no control over anything, i need something to pick me up. Music is probably the very best way to pick up anyone's spirit. When people think about being stranded on an island, most think about materialistic things to bring, such as a cell phone or an mp3 player or a DVD player; however I would think of a big knife and i would make up my own songs. Music was started as chanting from workers in Egypt and all over the world, I can do that too.

Well, if I were stranded on an island I think I would be content on just being there, at least at the beginning. I would love to listen to the waves and soak up some sun rays. But if I had a magazine, I would like to read Family Circle, it has good recepies and good articles.

If I were stranded on an island, I don't think I would have a movie to watch because I would love the peace of being outside until I was ready to be rescued. I mainly watch childrens movies right now like Cars and Ice Age.

If I was stranded on an island, I would like to listen to music. I would have inspirational songs, praise songs, a mixture of country, rock, and hip hop music. Praise music to wake up and worship, and the other songs to give me some variety. I think I would like to be deserted on an island as long as I had enough food to eat and it was a no longer than a week. If I had to hunt to survive I would probably be in trouble.

If I were stranded on an island the magazine that I would like to see wash up to shore would be People. Reading the celebrity news and gossip would help keep me entertained and also would help keep my mind off being stranded on the island.

Footloose is the movie that I would love to have with me on the island. It's my all time favorite movie. Since I would be out there all by myself I could get up and do all the dance moves with Kevin Bacon. It would keep me entertained for hours because I can watch that movie over and over again and never get tired of it.

The album I would take with me would definitely be No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problem by Kenny Chesney. It's all about being on the beach, so I would try to imagine myself in the islands living it up and taking in all the sun and sand. I think it would help me keep my mind off being stranded on the island at least for a little while.

Even though it would be nice to be able to keep up with politics on a daily basis, I would rather choose US Weekly as my magazine if I were stranded on an island. In reality, the chances of being rescued from the island may be slim. Therefore, I would rather enjoy reading something entertaining, rather than stress out over the politics of America. US Weekly would keep me entertained by reading about celebrities and their current gossip.

One movie that would be interesting to watch while being stranded on this particular island would be “The Beach” with Leonardo DiCaprio. I have always enjoyed this movie and it would seem like an interesting story to go along with my occasion. It would make me want to create a Utopian Island similar to the one in the movie. The only difference in my island would be that the drama shown in the ending did not exist.

The album that I would choose on this remote island would have to be Bob Marley’s Greatest Hits. I would choose Bob Marley’s music because it is relaxing and makes me feel happy. Thus, his music would be suitable for my Utopian theme.

This blog made me really think about being stranded and how I would be entertained during the time I was stranded. If the magazine had to be a weekly magazine I would have to choose Time magazine so I could keep up with the current happenings, but if I had the choice of a monthly magazine I would choose Journey, a Christian guidance magazine. I find an inner peace and inspiration when I read this magazine. I would like to take the movie, “Cast Away” since Tom Hanks was stranded on an island. I might find some ideas to help me survive and also entertain me at the same time. The one song I find dear to me and also makes me feel like I can do anything is “More Than Words”, By Extreme. My husband sang this song to me when we were dating and it’s very special to me. All these choices might help me to keep my sanity during the time I’m stranded.

If I were stranded on an island I would definitely be glad to have some for of entertainment. Assuming I found a way to consistently power my portable devices I could get along fine with the following:

The magazine I would hope to wash up on shore is PC Magazine. I love to read about technology and ways to implement it into modern society. Hopefully I would come across an article that would help or inspire me to invent or manufacture a device to get me off the island.

The movie I would take with me is Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. This is one of my favorite movies, and I think the theme of the movie would be fitting to my situation, being stranded. In the movie, the two main characters run into many unforeseen coincidences that nearly prevents one of them from getting home in time for Thanksgiving. Similarly, I am sure I would try several, probably fruitless, attempts to escape the island, only end up back at square one. (Really counting on that magazine to help me.)

The song I would take with me would probably be "Days of Our Lives" by Bone Thugs-N-Harmony. The song holds no real significance for the given situation, but it is a song I use to listen to for long periods of time that does not get on my nerves. Although, being on an island by myself, I'm sure that would change after several hundred playbacks.

People magazine would defiantly be my choice for magazine. I love all the celebrity gosip and story's in the magazine. It's very entertaining to know who's dating who. The puzzles in the back also provide entertainment for me.

There is no question on my movie choice. Dazed and Confused would be the only movie that I would want with me on a desert island. It's always been one of my favorite movie's. This movie always brings my sprit up no matter how down I am. So I figured having an entertaining movie that makes me laugh and brings my spirt up would be a good choice, if I was stuck on an Island.

I would have to take Jimmy Buffet's greatest hits. Being stuck on a desert Island would suck in itself so I need some type of insperational music. Jimmy Buffet is perfect because he has great beach music. I figure when I'm finally found and rescued; I would want the people who found me to say that wow this guy really knows how to party it up by himself.

If I were stranded on an island and a magazine washed up on shore each week I would want it to be Cosmo. Why? I really enjoy Cosmo and honesntly that is what would matter if I were stranded I would want something that would entertain me. I wouldnt really be worried about politics and such because it would not pertain to me anymore.

What one movie would I like to take with me if I were stranded on an island... this is a hard question. I would have to choose a home movie that I made of all my friends and family years ago but if it has to me a big screen movie I would have to say the little mermaid. It would remind me of my childhood and when I was happy, not stuck alone on an island.

If I were stranded I would like to have Jason Aldean on my ipod because he sounds just like my boyfriend and it is something that always makes me smile when I hear it because I think of him. All his songs are great to me so I would have to have him in my ears.

If I were stranded on an island, I would like to read Ebony magazine each week to keep in touch with what African Americans are doing to contribute to society. I would like to know who has or who is contributing to mankind. I would like to have in my possession, the movie - The Color Purple starring Whoppi Goldberg because it is a movie about rising up out of the state of depression and oppression and surviving. And lastly, I would like to have the song Happy Feelings by Maze featuring Frankie Beverly. Because it is a happy-feel-good song, and although I would be stranded on an island, I could play that song and feel care-free for at least 3-4 minutes.

If I were stranded on an island, I would like to receive People magazine. Like most of America, I feed off of what is going on in the world of entertainment. I know it sounds crazy, but I would still like to be kept up-to-date on what is going on in the lives of celebrities. It sure would be nice to be able to keep up with the world while stranded on the island. The entertainment world that is; I definitely do not want to know what is going on in the news. That would be too depressing!

If I were stranded on an island and could have one movie with me, I would definitely have the movie Cast Away. Cast Away, as you probably know, is about a guy who is actually stranded on an island. He definitely adapts to his environment and learns how to catch/gather his food as well as create a "makeshift" home for himself. I would want this movie with me to keep me encouraged. I tend to give up easily and would need motivation to make it through being stranded.

The album that I would want would have to be the Zac Brown Band Toes loaded on my mp3 player. If I am going to have to keep myself entertained, this album is definitely the way to go. The song toes is about relaxing on a beach without a care in the world. That would definitely have to be my philosophy on life. Being stranded on an island, I might as well make the best of it!

If I was stranded on an island, I would want the ESPN Magazine to be washed up on shore every week. I would be able to keep up with all the drama, trades, and suspensions happening in sports. With all the performance enhancing drugs and infidelity going it, it is not far from the reality shows on VH1, MTV, etc. So with this, I would be able to get the best of both worlds. I'd get sports, comedy, drama, and entertainment year round.

The movie I’d want to take with me is Ferris Buler’s Day Off. I would want this movie because it is one of my all time favorites. I still laugh at it til this day if I can catch it on TV. I love the 80s music and it brings you back to your youth when you didn’t have any responsibilities or bills, taxes, mortgages, etc. It brings me back to a time when all I thought about is what was happening on Friday or Saturday night.

The album I’d want on my mp3 player is Prince B Sides Greatest Hits. I figure if I’m stranded, I want to have music that I loved. It would be a variety of fast, slow, and fun songs to lift up my spirits. The hits would be able to cover various moods from high to low. The best thing about Prince’s music at that time was that it was creative and he didn’t just talk about the same thing that everyone else was talking about.
