Stranded on an Island

Hello all,
I'm actually at the beach this weekend on vacation and am writing this at the island's local library. Isn't technology neat. However, we had a bad storm here last night and the island went pitch black. Ahh, stranded on an island (kind of). That brings up an old question. The old "what would you take with you if stranded on an island?"

So here's my media related question to you this week. Write a short paragraph on each:

1. If you were stranded on an island, what magazine would you like to wash up onshore every week? And why?

2. If you were stranded on an island, what one movie would you like to take with you (in a portable dvd player, of course)? And why?

3. If you were stranded on an island, what one album/song would you like to be loaded on the mp3 player you took with you? And why?

Good Luck

1. If I were stranded on an island, I would like for OK magazine or Sister 2 Sister magazine to wash onshore every week, because I would want to read about the celebrity gossip. Celebrity gossip is interesting and entertaining. I would want to stay up-to-date on that.

2. If I were stranded on an island, I think that I would take Love and Basketball with me. I love that movie. That is one movie that I could watch over and over. I guess I like it because I can relate to it a little bit. It starts out in childhood and just about everyone has had a childhood crush and it goes on into adulthood and just about everyone has been in love and been heartbroken. So it is my favorite movie and that is the one that I would take with me, however there are many more. :) LOL

3. If I were stranded on an island I think that I would take either the R. Kelly TP2 album or the Usher Confessions album. I guess between the two if I had to choose, which would be very hard, I would choose the R. Kelly album simply because I think he has more songs on there that I like. You can (well I can) literally listen to that album from start to finish. You dont come across albums like that anymore. And I like albums like that. I like all of the songs and thats the one that I would upload on my mp3 player.

First off...TOTALLY JEALOUS and SOOOO totally wrong of you to brag...but since you are our professor, we will let you slide...or I will anyway!

If I were stranded on a island, the magazine I would want delivered would be one of two: Martha Stewart's Living because, whether you like her or not, the woman is very crafty and resourceful. At least I could eat well while I was on my extended stay! If not Martha Stewart, then a "do it yourself" magazine that is the magazine media equivalency of the tv show "McGuyver". Seriously, it would be one that I could use to help me learn to build structures for shelter and such (possibly a boat?) to assist in my survival effort.

If I had to chose one movie, honestly it would be The Princess Bride. Since my magazine will help me survive, I will need some entertainment and that is the one movie that I can watch over and over, find something new, and I never get tired of it. It has action, suspense and drama! Good all around flick! "HAVE FUN STORMING THE CASTLE!"

The last question is a bit of a conundrum. I don't actually have a favorite band that I would just listen to that ONE BAND for the rest of my life. This is not technically an option, so I'll answer it this way then actually BY the question. My friends and I made a 2 cd set of songs, each of which means something to us individually and as a group. These songs are on my iPod as well as on CDs for my car and when I get stressed or upset about something, it always makes me smile. Some of them are there for funny reasons (for example, "Everyday I'm Hustlin'" is on there because we all like the comedian Katt Williams AND because we are all three teachers and we know how busy we stay) and some are for more personal reasons ("Fighter" by Christina Aguilera because of the tough times we go through in life prove only to make us stronger). We complied this list together and, while it is hilariously funny and seemingly completely random, it has a very special meaning to me. However, if I had to pick one song, it would be Green Day "Time of Your Life." It is just one of those songs that has the ability to lift my spirits from the memories it evokes and calm me down with its "mellowness" all at the same time!! Incidently, those 3 songs will probably resurface on the 'soundtrack of my life' assignment! TEASER ALERT!!

Have a great week everyone!!

If I were stranded on an island I don't think I would want a magazine every week. I would rather get a newspaper every week. However, I'm not sure if I would want a national newspaper, like USA Today or if I would want a local newspaper from my hometown. I obviously would want to know whats going on in my home community but I think thats something my family could fill me in on later when, or if, I returned home. The national news would keep me up to date with politics and national stories of importance. Yeah, I'd definitely want USA Today.

If I could take one movie on the island with me it would have to be Castaway so I could watch and learn how to survive. If I had to bring my favorite movie, for entertainment purposes, it would have to be Gone With the Wind. Its like a 4-hour long movie so it would keep me busy longer than regular movies.

If I took my MP3 player to this island and had to pick an album or song to have on it... hmm, that's a tough one because I love all music. I guess it would have to be an old country greatist hits album with Hank Williams, Conway Twitty, Loretta Lynn, etc. A plethora of artists all singing good ole country music. Can't go wrong with that.

1.) My favorite mag is Golf Digest, yet I'm not sure I'd want that on a deserted island. Chances are my clubs wouldn't be handy, ARGH! So, I'd want to know what's the latest in sports... ESPN the magazine. Now from a purely ironic stand point, I'd want a "How to build a boat that will guarentee your safe return home while stranded on a deserted island." (teehee)

2.) Favorite movie: Tombstone. The one with Val Kilmer, Kurt Russell, Sam Elliot, and Sam Elliot's mustache. That's right, his mustache got his own billet. Why, because it deserves it. It's an awesome movie that is soooo quotable. Plus, it's the best role Val Kilmer has ever played. If you want to know why the west was won, it's because, in the words of Sir Edmond Blake "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing." Kurt Russel's charachter, Wyatt Earp did something.

3.) Tough! Anything by David Crowder Band. I really enjoy their "Church Music". However, the Robbie Seay Band has an amazing CD out right now, called "Miracle" that would give it a run for it's money. I really enjoy worship music and these guys have a true heart for worship. I'd need that to handle being on a deserted island... faith. Robbie Seay Band wins.

1. If you were stranded on an island, what magazine would you like to wash up onshore every week? Black Confessions. And why? It is a steamy sensual magazine that let’s your imagination run wild. I used to buy Black Confessions when I was old enough to get allowance and spend it how I wanted. My mother had no idea, but every time I had the chance to buy one, I did. I used to be so excited to get home and hide out in my room and read the magazine from page to page. This is when I found that I LOVED to read. After then, I started to buy romance novels and still read a lot of them to this day. I wonder if they still publish Black Confessions magazine. Of course, it would be GREAT if my husband were with me on beach, since the magazine is very sensual.....

2. If you were stranded on an island, what one movie would you like to take with you (in a portable dvd player, of course)? I am not a movie fanatic. It would probably be Grease. And why? Grease is my all time favorite. If it came on the television right now, I would watch it. We used to have it on VHS and we watched it every single day for at least a year. I love music and I love the music in this movie. In addition to this, I loved the story line of love.

3. If you were stranded on an island, what one album/song would you like to be loaded on the mp3 player you took with you? My Life by Mary J Blige. And why? She is my all time favorite. I loved her through her dealings with drugs and abusive relationships. She always sang about what she was going through at that time. No matter what, her songs always have a message. I love her voice and her story, so she is the one person that I would love to have loaded on my mp3 player.

1.) If I had to have a magazine wash up on shore everyday, it would have to be US Magazine. I am obsessed and fascinated by celebrity life and gossip going on in their world. Face it, their life is much more interesting than ours and it is a good way to not think about what all is really going on and focus on the drama they are having and be glad it is not happening to us.
2.) If I had to have one movie with me, it would be "My Father The Hero" with Katherine Heigl. It was filmed in the late 1990's and is about a teenage girl who goes to the carribean with her father so that they can re-connect and get to know each other again. I chose this movie because it is something I can really realte to and I just loved the movie.
3.) Finally, if I could only have one album, it would have to be Britney Spears Greatest Hits CD. I like this because it has a variety of songs (love songs, songs you can sing out loud to, etc..)for every kind of mood you are in and you just want to sing along with her on most of them.

If I were stranded on an island I think it may not be so bad. I love the beach, I love getting away from it all. Hopefully i could get rescued in a couple of months because I am sure it is not all it is cracked up to be.

1. The one magazine that I would want to wash up on the beach would be Outdoor Living. I though about my favorite magazine, bicycling, but it would make me long for my bike. I may be able to pick up a pointer or two from Outdoor Living, and if not, it is still a great mag to read.

2. The one movie I would want to bring with my portable dvd player would be "Castaway" (not sure why but it seems appropriate). I could maybe pick up a few pointers from the movie. Maybe I could have my own "Wilson".

3. The one Song/Album I would want would be something from Kenny Chesney. I am not a big fan of Country Music, but his music always makes me want to go to the beach. It would help past the time until I am rescued.

Being stranded on an island, you'd have a lot of time on your hands. I'd hope to see some sort of woodworking magazine wash up on a monthly basis. This would help me to building necessary items, like a shelter, or tools. Even though I'd be stranded, it would at least serve to improve my quality of life on the island. Mayne I'll eventually get an issue with details about how to build a boat.

I suppose if I had access to one movie, it would have to be a terrible disaster movie, like The DAy After Tomorrow. Now I've never seen this movie, but it would help keep me optomistic knowing there are situations worse than mine. If anything, it would have to run on battery power, since the island is likely to have no electricity, which means I'd only have to watch it 4-5 times before the DVD player's battery died.

This is the same situation with the Mp3 player. You'd only get a limited number of uses before the device lost its charge. Which means, once the device dies, the last thing you listened to will be stuck in your head the rest of your time on the island. Since I can listen to most Bad Religion discs repeatedly, I'd take "Recipe for Hate," since I wouldn't mind having that in my head for an island eternity.

If I were stranded on an island I think I would want some sort of survivalist magazine to wash up on shore every week. I don't really care which one as long as it's useful. I think that would be a very valuable item, so I don't you know.....die.

I think the one movie I would want to take would be The Empire Strikes Back, because after something like 28 or 30 years of watching it, it's still good. In my opinion it's hands down the best of the six Star Wars Episodes. The direction, dialog, performances, and story are all better than the others. Also, the cheese factor's a lot lower.

I don't know if I could choose just one album/song to have on the island. I think I would have to write down several on pieces of paper and pull one out of a hat. The albums/songs I would narrow it down to would probably be The French Kicks, Devotchka, Elvis Perkins, Elvis Presley, The Morning Benders, Ra Ra Riot, Vampire Weekend (first album), and that song Shambala by Three Dog Night. Why would I want one of those? I don't seem to tire of them quickly and they make me feel better. Oh yeah, and the Turbo Fruits. That album makes me laugh.

I feel so sorry for you "stranded" on an island, suffering on some white sand beach!

1. I was tempted to copy Dwight Schrute's answer "Physicians Desk reference...hollowed out, inside: waterproof matches, iodine tablets, beet seeds, protein bars, NASA blanket.." but our question solely pertained to magazines. I'm not a big magazine reader, so this one made me think. I wouldn't want a technology magazine because I would want to be suprised at the new tech when I make it back home years later. I guess I would like to have an Astronomy wash up since I love looking up at the stars. There wouldn't be a whole lot more to do, so maybe an astronomy magazine would provide some entertainment and knowledge for when after the sun goes down, and the sky is full of stars.

2. My wife would kill me if she was stranded with me and I picked this movie, but I'd choose Brewster's Millions. It has been my go-to movie whenever I can't decide what to watch. The comedy of Richard Pryor is genius and he's put into a situation that anyone would like to be in (or would you?!?). I want to be entertained while stranded, in between reading issues of Astronomy magazine.

3. This is a tuff one since I like so many different genres. I would have to say a Jimmy Eat World album. Probably their Bleed American album. Again, I go back to the reason that its' my go-to album that I listen to whenever I'm not sure what I want. It was between this and the soundtrack to Les Miserables, but I'm going for the more blood pumping music.

Fun assignment this week!

There are so many choices and so many different levels of entertainment for each one. I could pick Maxim, but that would just be pure torture. I could pick Men’s Health, but the information about protein diets and sexual performance would be useless. I also thought of In-Fisherman; it would probably be filled with useful information about catching fish and possibly aid in keeping me alive. Out of the hundreds of possibilities, however, I would probably pick People; viewing pictures of Hollywood stars and reading articles about them would make me feel less alone. Also, I would still be in “the loop” when I got back to normal society - I could be gone for years, and return home commenting on what Eva Longoria wore to the Oscars that year…everyone would be baffled and amazed, and I would probably get to meet her because of my tragedy.
If I was stranded on a desert island and could only take one movie I would take Cast Away, hands down. Of course I’m joking, but one has to admit that having that movie would be almost like a tutorial for deserted island survival.
I recently changed the pick of my favorite-movie-of-all-time from The Sixth Sense to Avatar, but I can’t imagine taking either of those. The Sixth Sense would probably make me go insane, and watching Avatar over and over would probably give me Post-Avatar Depression – a condition where people feel that Pandora (the world that Avatar is based on) is so much better than Earth they get depressed after viewing the film. Not being able to pick either of my favorites, I would have to go with another favorite - the enjoyable comedy, Happy Gilmore. Adam Sandler is one of my favorite comedians and I always get a laugh watching any of his movies, but this one is the best!
Just like a movie, having one album would be awful, but if I had to pick one album to accompany me on an island I would go with any live Dave Matthews album. The songs are incredibly long on the live albums, and there are usually about 15 on each. Also, I never get tired of hearing Dave mumble through his songs like only he can do.
Being all alone on an island would be terrible, but with the help of People Magazine, Adam Sandler’s Happy Gilmore, and a live CD from Dave Matthews (plus a solar-powered power converter to power all of my gadgets) I think I could make it.

If I were stranded on an island the weekly magazine I would want to wash up on the beach would be sports illustrated. I wouldn’t have television or radio so the weekly issue of Sports Illustrated would be my only outlet to the world of sports. Watching and playing sports is my favorite hobby.

I would take the movie Dumb and dumber. Being stranded on a desert island can be a very depressing thing. Having no responsibilities and hanging out at the beach would grow old quickly. I would want a movie that helps me take my mind off of my situation and makes me laugh. Dumb and dumber is the funniest movie of all time in my opinion.

I grew up in Southern California. The one song that transports me back home is “California Love,” by Tupac and Dr. Dre. This was a very popular song when I was in high school. Every time I hear this song to this day I think of home, friends and the old high school days.

1. Rolling Stone. I've always loved the articles and writing style. Plus, I'd get to read about music, pop culture, TV, movies, and politics. Though it would probably not give me a complete picture of what's going on back home, I'd at least have an idea.

2. Love Actually. I used to hate Christmas, but now I love it, even though I have to travel a long way to be with my family during the holidays. I really enjoy all the different stories and characters. I also love the airport scenes where everyone is greeting their families at the airport - it makes me happy.

3. Mellon Collie & the Infinite Sadness by The Smashing Pumpkins. I really like the Smashing Pumpkins, and this is probably my favorite of their albums. If you like 90s alt rock, then there is enough variety within that genre on the cds not to get too bored with it.

1. If I was stranded on an island, I would like for an Essence Magazine to wash up on shore every week. I chose Essence because the magazine is full of beauty and fashion ideas, seasonal tips and information, recipies, relationship advice, and topics of that nature that I can relate to.

2. If I was stranded on an island, I would take the movie Life in my dvd player. Life is one of my favorite movies because it is very comical and I like the way the movie shows the progression of time while Ray and Claude were imprisoned.

3. I would like to have the soundtrack of waiting to exhale loaded on an mp3 player if I was stranded on an island. That soundtrack is over a decade old, but I can relate to some of the songs and its just easy listening and clean music! The songs are sang by so many talented artists that I love! That soundtrack is a classic!

1.) I would prefer an issue of X-men Uncanny to wash up on show, but I guess I don't have that option. I probably enjoy reading Ebony magazine the most so I would be excited to see it wash up on shore. They often spotlight my favorite artists/celebrities. Last month they had Prince and they did a good job interviewing him and an even better job with his cover picture. Essense magazine and Rolling Stone are two other good ones.

2.) I would want to take the X-men Movie Trilogy with me. No matter how old those movies get, I'll always want to re-watch them just for the fight scenes. Those movies have a really good replay value. The acting probably isn't the absolute best, but the action is where it's at. I guess the movie would fit my personality best.

3.) It would absolutely have to be a Billie Holiday greatest hits CD. I would prefer to have a large one with one hundred songs on it. I'm in complete and total love with Billie's Holiday's music. If you had asked which book we'd want to take with us then I would have said Billie's autobiography Lady Sings the Blues. Also, if I'm stranded, I'm probably gonna be pretty depressed, so what better person to listen to then Billie Holiday?

1. If I was stranded on an island the magazine that I would want to wash up onshore every week is Martha Stewart Living because her magazine is about survival and I have read her magazine and it shows you how to make something out of anything you have and I would have to do that if stranded on an island by myself. I would have to know how to use the resources that I have. Also how to get food, prepare and eat. She basically tells you how to do practically anything with what you have to survive.

2. The movie I would take with me if stranded on an island is Cast Away because I could get information on how to live alone on the island and survive like Tom Hanks did in the movie. It shows things he went through and how he handled them. How he kept his sanity will stranded and he never gave up hope even though he was there for years. He had a great imagination to help keep him sane.

3. The album/song on the mp3 player would be Seal’s Album – Soul and the song would be A Change is Gonna Come. I love this album and all the songs on it because they are inspirational. The song A Change is Gonna Come gives hope of being rescued from the island and having patience while being there. It tells about going through a lot of things throughout your life and how there is hope for a change. It’s a song that keeps you focused on what needs to be done.

If I were stranded on an island, I would want to see In Touch show up every week. I think I would like to have this magazine because it's full of gossip and the craziness of the stars. I don't want to read about the state of the world because it would just depress me more.
I would watch Can't Buy Me Love over and over and over. I love that movie (and I realize that I am showing my age :)). This movie just has a "feel good" about it that I enjoy. The nerdy guy gets the girl, who learned a lesson and found herself. Typical 80's movie, but it's awesome!
I would want the album Bad Company by (of course) Bad Company. The whole album is fun to me and it brings back a lot of memories for high school and college.

1. The magazine that I would love to have wash up ashore every week would be Sports Illustrated. Certainly, the most evident reason would be because of my deep enjoyment of sports. Ever since I was a kid, whenever I saw a Sports Illustrated at the library or waiting room of a business or even the doctor’s office, I would pick the magazine up and become glued to the words on the page. Perhaps it was because in those days (before the internet) sports commentary was hard to find. The local newspaper would mostly run objective accounts of games with a sprinkling of commentary (mostly in the Sunday edition). As I poured through SI’s colorful pages of commentary and editorial reporting, I would thoroughly relish the insight it brought and stories it related.

2. The movie I would bring with me to the island would be “Just Friends.” While not a well known comedy, it is one that my wife and I have enjoyed for many years. It is full of quotes that we continue to reference almost daily, and every time we sit down to watch it, it always makes us laugh as if it was the first time we were watching it.

3. The album I would have loaded on my mp3 player would be Third Eye Blind’s first album, which is self titled. It was released during the end of my senior year and became a regular in my car’s CD player for many years to come. I attended three concerts by TEB and even went backstage at the first one to meet them. Every song, every lyric and every guitar riff I know by heart not to mention the flood of memories the songs bring to mind whenever I hear them. Too bad they never made another great album, but their first one definitely is one that I would always enjoy to have with me.

If I were stranded on island and could have one magazine to wash up weekly, I would choose "Us Weekly." I think with all the work associated with being stranded - building a hut, finding food, trying to figure out how to be found or how to get off the island- I might need a break from reality. What better way to break from reality than to get weekly updates on what's going on with "Brangelina" or Tom-Kat. I will need mind-numbing activity to help rejuvenate me and this all important news will do just the trick.
If I could choose just one movie to have on my portable DVD player, I would choose "Elf". I would definitely need some humor to break up some of the frustration associated with not being able to break open my morning coconut, and would most surely need a lift in spirits if my hut fell ontop of me during the night (because I have no "building" skills). In order to ensure survival and avoid jumping head first into the shallow water, I need to laugh until my cheeks hurt and Will Farrell in "Elf" would give me that. I can never get tired of hearing, "Santa, I know him!"
If I were stranded on an island, I would need good island music to help me enjoy being stranded. Who better than Jack Johnson and his album "In Between Dreams" to have on your iPod when stranded on an island. He helps put it perspective; don't be bummed out because your stranded, just make some banana pancakes and pretend like it's the weekend. Worse comes to worse you can "just staple it together and call it bad weather."

The magazine that I would choose is very difficult because I rarely read magazines. However, if you count a cooking magazine, I would definitely choose Rachel Ray. The reason I choose this particular magazine is because I would need a variety of dishes to prepare on a stranded island with limited resources. I love to cook different things, but being on an island would make my choices much harder. Plus she makes food fun, appealing, and also yummy.
As for the movie I would choose, I must say, Grease. This is one movie I could watch over and over without becoming bored. The movie is youthful, funny, entertaining, and of course, musical. Each character feels like a friend (which would be great company on a deserted island). Also, when I sing each song, it puts me in a happy mood.
The album I would load onto my Alanis Morisette “Jagged Little Pill”. Her music is just so evolved, and being stranded may cause me to have a cynical attitude. The frustration I would have over my isolated location is perfect for each track on the album. Then I could vent to musical track and scream like her as I sing to the palm trees and dolphins.

1. If I were stranded on a island, I would want the Fortune magazine to wash onshore every week. The magazine has always been one of my favorites since I was 16. The financial information the magazine provides has always been of interest to me.

2. The movie I would take with me on the island is The Dark Knight. The Dark Knight will remain a favorite in my books forever. The performance of Heath Ledger in the movie was special. The script of the film also is excellence in a way that it never gets old. It tells the darker side of the Batman saga. It goes back to the film's roots with a focus on the rivalry between joker and batman.

3. My favorite genre of music is hip hop and r&b. The one album I would want on a secluded island is Lil Wayne's mixtape The Drought 3. The Drought 3 is a compilation of Lil Wayne singing on other artists beat. In hip hop, the undergound music world is the key to success. The Drought 3 launched the career of Lil Wayne. It showed the world what kind of artist he was and why the hip hop world needed Lil Wayne. The cd is still considered one of the greatest underground cd. I could listen to this cd over and over.

If you were stranded on an island, what magazine would you like to wash up onshore every week? And why? It would have to be O magazine or ESPN. I love O magazine, from the advise articles, articles on health and fitness and the articles of clothing. O magazine in a complete magazine. It would hard to decided between O and ESPN, because I would definitely have to keep up with the sports world.

If you were stranded on an island, what one movie would you like to take with you (in a portable dvd player, of course)? And why? This is a easy one. My favorite all time movie is Color Purple. Although I have it on dvd, every time it comes on tv, I have to watch it. This was the last movie my sisters watched with my mom, so it's not only a favorite but a movie close to heart.

If you were stranded on an island, what one album/song would you like to be loaded on the mp3 player you took with you? And why? Any old school music. I love the oldies, Aretha Franklin, Frankie Beverly & Maze, Earth Wind in Fire, Sade. Any music I can sing the words to and understand what the artist is saying.
